The Incas, like the men of the Andes many centuries ago, venerated the mountains. These deities were local and provided luck and protection to the people. The most important were the highest peaks. For example, the main Inca "Apus" were Salkantay and Ausangate. Even Machu Picchu was a mountain venerated by the Incas.
